Seafloor geodesy

Cascadia subduction zone is overdue for a major earthquake. A key question regarding natural hazards is whether such an earthquake can generate a large tsunami. Our ability to answer this question is limited by the lack of deformation measurements near the shallow portion of the subduction zone. It is very difficult to measure seafloor deformation accurately. Our lab is collaborating with physical oceanographers to find solutions to this challenge. Graduate student Bing He is focusing her effort on this proejct.

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.” ― Albert Einstein
